I wanted to give you the other side of the coin with this Salon Article —   it makes some good points about the Victorian Living article.  Mostly that Chrisman does come off as a little derisive when she talks about reading only primary resources.  Commentaries by scholars who have spent years doing research isn’t anything to be dismissed lightly…I have read Ridolfo Capoferro’s lovely Great Representation of the Art and Use of Fencing (In translation, …

Yesterday, I finished the second draft.  June 30th seemed like the perfect day to finish a second draft. I celebrated with bacon sandwiches (home grown tomatoes and eggs!) and a trip up to a fencing practice.  I got to practice some German long sword, which was especially nice, and got to just fight.  No running anything, just chatting a little and fencing as much as I can.  Despite my hiatus I felt pretty good…I …

This Saturday was the Rapier and Costume Academy in Pittsburgh. I really loved it and hope we have one every year. I am inspired to go back to an idea of what I have been playing with for many years…to distill down the similarities and the differences in the different old masters of rapier styles so that you can, technically, look at the sheet, look at the fencer, and sort of guess what they …

There’s something that I’ve gotten into the habit of doing, called split focus. I can type an email to someone and talk to a student at the same time and mostly make sense. I can multi-task, because that’s how I’ve trained myself. Of course, it’s also probably why when I’m tired I do the first step of things in my mind and continue on from there, but everything has its price. But it’s not …

This post is backwards, chronologically, because really, what matters more this weekend than the fact that I am now an authorized SCA Light Rapier fencer? What follows: The story of my authorization and a lovely present that will encourage my belly dancing interest, and a time capsule (of sorts) found in the walls of my house…

I was speaking to my mum this morning, and we were talking about appointments. “You know, I have a hair appointment Wednesday,” I said, which surprised her because I never go to hair appointments, but, you know, sometimes I have pretensions towards acting like I’m a female member of the species. Then I thought for a moment, rolled up a newspaper, and handed it to her. “You should probably whack me when I say …

Saturday, I went to an SCA event for my shire, Melee on the Mount. When I woke up (and I woke early…I wanted to be there by 9:00, so I woke only shortly after I would have normally to go to work.) the same storm that had made me wakeful since 5:00 was still going on, and I knew that my family would think I was crazy to get up and go to an …

This could be a meme of sorts, if you wanted to try it out. Because I am a spiritual person, sometimes I try and see how things go through my life, how faith or deity or coincidence or luck play a role in how I’ve gotten to a point. And I was thinking about how I finally got started in fencing, and I could see this silver thread of events through my life that …

I am in the world’s best mood. William’s Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis is playing, and it makes me just…soar. It’s Mission Day, which means that there are no classes, and I have been alone all morning, working hard to get everything caught up. My Myspace player is playing…Feist’s 1234 was just on before this…and I am feeling free and joyful and pleased to be alive. The gentlemen I mentioned, the fencers, …
